In qualitative research, the researcher is the primary instrument for data collection as well as data analysis. Data collection frequently occurs through fieldwork, which means the researcher goes onsite to the research subjects' location to observe and record behavior in its natural setting. In addition, data are frequently recorded using field notes, which are free-flowing descriptions of research subjects, activities, and setting that also can include sketches or maps.

A primary benefit of qualitative research centers on the collection of data that are unique to the individual research subject's perspective. Qualitative research allows a connection to be established between phenomena being studied and research subjects' perceptions of those phenomena. Another advantage of qualitative research is flexibility; it allows the DNP researcher to be prepared to adjust the study in response to obstacles that arise during the study and to alter the established course of the project so new research questions can be developed and other methods for data collection can be established as needed. Qualitative research also can provide a realistic description of how a research subject relates to the environment and to the interventions implemented in the study; as a result, a research question regarding the reason why a patient is not responding as expected to treatment could be solved through qualitative research. Because qualitative research can use subjective information and research participants' observations to describe the natural setting of the variables being studied, a qualitative research design may yield more comprehensive information than would a quantitative research design.
